Late Last Night
 cover

upMoney
(Hans Theessink)

Refrain:
Money, money, money,
Makes the world go round
Money, money, money
From you're born 'til you're under the ground
Money, money, money,
You're the devil in disguise
They tell you money sets your mind at ease
Nothing but doggone lies

I was born some 80 years ago
In eighteen-ninety-three
I grew up and I went to school
Then I raised a family
Worked like a dog from morning till night
Could hardly live on my pay
When I came home and walked into the door
My wife and kids would say:

Money, money, money ...

As a young man I fought in world war one
We had some terrible years
Then the twenties came, we settled our lives
Without too many fears
Depression time was a terrible time
I still hear the hungry cry
Then in world war II
Millions died for one big lie:

Money, money, money ...
When the war was over we started to build
A world with peace for all
Then we started producing a whole lotta things
We had a great big ball
At first it helped us live our lives
But then we wanted more
Instead of peace of mind we've got a lot of garbage
Piled up from shoreto shore

Hans Theessink: vocals, bottleneck, vintage board
Piers Partridge: national steelbody
Per Knudsen: bass
Paul Millns, Dave Travis, Gerry Lockran: backing vocals

up1913 Massacre
(Woody Guthrie)

Take a trip with me in 1913
To Calumet, Michigan, in the copper country
I'll take you to a place called Italian Hall
And the miners are having their big Christmas Ball

I'll take you in the door and up a high stair
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere
I'll let you shake hands with the people you see
And watch the kids dance 'round the big Christmas tree

There's talking and laughing and songs in the air
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere
Before you know it you're friends with us all
And you're dancing around and around in the hall

You ask about work and you ask about pay
They'll tell you tehey make less than a dollar a day
Working their copper claims, risking their lives
So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives

A little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet
Here all is fun, you would not realize
That the copper boss thug men are milling outside

The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door
One of them yelled and he screamed "There's a fire"
A lady, she hollered "There's no such a thing,
Keep on with your party
There's no such a thing"

A few people rushed and there's only a few
"It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you"
A man grabbed his daughter and he carried her down
But the thugs held the door and could not get out

And then others followed, a hundred or more
But most everybody remained on the floor
The gun thugs, they laughed at their murderous joke
And the children were smothered on the stairs by the door

Such a terrible sight I never did see
We carried our children back up to their tree
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree
And the children that died there were seventy-three

The piano played a slow funeral tune
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon
The parents, they cried and the miners, they moaned
"See what your greed for money has done ?"

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar, fiddle
Paul Millns: piano
Piers Partridge: dobro

upLate Last Night
(Hans Theessink)

Late last night as I laid sleeping
Dreamed I heard you call my name
Packed my pack - went to the station
For to jump on the fastest train

Mr. Conductorman - Mr. Conductorman
Tell me - what time does your train ride
I'm going to see my baby
Want to see her before daylight

Don't you hear that whistle blowing
Can't you feel that steady roll
This old sound of wheels a-moving
Sure does satisfy my soul

Mr. Conductorman - Mr. Conductorman
Come on - let your whistle blow
When you see her on the platform
Gotta let your train drive slow

Oh my baby - oh my baby
Oh my baby - here I come
Put your loving arms around me
Like the circle 'round the sun

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar, board, harmonica
John Nørgaard: percussion
Gerry Lockran: guitar

upGypsy Moth
(Hans Theessink)

The Gypsy Moth is a mighty high flyer
Sailing on the inland sea
You are the object of my desire
You're the sun and the moon to me
I believe in loving you
Now that you keep me from feeling blue
You make me happy when everything I do gets me in trouble
River can rock, river can roll
River can carry you down to the sea

Rambling Jack had a woman he loved
But the woman didn't love Jack back
She took his smile, she took his child
She took everything he had
River was the name she used
You know she kept him so damned confused
And everything she did got him in trouble
River cab rock, river can roll
River can carry Jack down to the sea

Now many long years have come and gone
Since John F. Kennedy died
I'm not sure but what that man
Was down right crucified
By the same bad guys, still telling lies
You know they keep us used and abused
And everything they do gets us in trouble
River can rock, river can roll
River can carry you down to the sea

The black raccoon by the light of the moon
Heard the music playin' soft and low
The songs we'd sing made the nighttime ring
And the raccoon loved the show
He went back and he told his friends
You know them humans that live on the edge of the forest
They all had a party and man
They really played my kind of music
River could rock, river could roll
River could carry you down to the sea

The Gypsy Moth is a mighty high flyer ...

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar
John Nørgaard: boards, jew's harp

upBefore They Close The Minstrel Show
(Bob Coltman)

The poster's peelin' underneath
Last summer's morning glory vine
An old white hat and a stump of cigar
And an empty bottle of wine

Lay me down, Carolina, lay me down
Don't want to wake up in the morning no more
Sing me one slow sad song for this one last old time
Before they close the minstrel show

Banjo's got a broken string
Don't 'spect I'll get to fix it now
Won't be no more time to sing
I'm rusty anyhow

Lay me down ...

Daddy Bones is dead I guess
You probably don't know or care
And Frank and Arch has gone away
Somewhere, I don't know where

Lay me down ...

The money and the crowd run out

Before we left the last town
This old show done played its run
And rung the curtain down

Lay me down

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar

upVictor Jara
(Adrian Mitchell)

Victor Jara of Chile
Lived like a shooting star
He fought for the people of Chile
With his songs and his guitar

Chorus:
His hands were gentle
His hands were strong

Victor Jara was a peasant
Worked from a few years old
He sat upon his father's plow
And watched the earth unfold

When the neighbours had a wedding
Or one of their children died
His mother sang all night for them
With Victor by her side

He grew up to be a fighter
Against the people's wrongs
He listened to their grieves and joys
And turned them into songs

He sang about the copper-miners
And those who worked the land
He sang about the factory-workers
And they knew he was their man

Then the generals ceased Chile
They arrested Victor then
They caged him in a stadium
With five-thousand frightened men

Victor stood in the stadium
His voice was brave and strong
And it sang for his fellow-prisoners
Till the guards cut short his song

They broke the bones in both his hands
They beat him on the head
Tortured him with electric shocks
And then they shot him dead

Victor Jara of Chile
Lived like a shooting star
He fought for the people of Chile
With his songs and his guitar

His hands were gentle
His hands were strong

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar
Paul Millns: piano
Per Knudsen: bass
John Nørgaard: squeezebox

upKeep It Clean
(Charlie Jordan / arr. Hans Theessink)

Well I went to the river, couldn't get across
Jumped on your Daddy 'cause I thought he was a horse

Roll him over - give him coca-cola
Whiskey-soda - saucer of ice-cream
It takes some soap 'n water
For to keep it clean

Well run on doctor, run on fast
What is wrong with the yes yes yes

Roll him over ...

If you wanna go to heaven when you d-i-e
Put on your collar and your t-i-e

Roll him over ...

Well run on doctor, run on fast
What is wrong with the yes yes yes

Roll him over ...

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar

upDrinking Problems
(Hans Theessink)

I sent her home to her mamma
'Cause she wouldn't treat me right
She beats me in the daytime
Kicks me overnight

Know, she's got a drinking problem
Tryin' to drown her soul
I tried a thousand times to help her
Baby I can't help you no more

When I first met you baby
You were nice and kind to me
But since you couldn't change your habit
You were slowly driftin' 'way from me

You've been a weight on my shoulder
Big iron chain round my leg
Baby I won't change my decision
Even though you plead and beg

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar, board
Piers Partridge: dobro

upSweet Home Chicago
(Robert Johnson / arr. Hans Theessink)

Hey baby, do you want to go (2 x)
Back to the great big bity
Sweet home Chicago

One and one is two
Two and two is four
I'm going to Chicago
To get myself some more

Hey baby, do you want to go ...

I've got six dollars in my pocket
Gonna grab you by the hand
Make it to the depot, get some tickets
From the depot-man

Hey baby, do you want to go ...

Hans Theessink: vocals, bottleneck, board
Paul Millns: piano, vocals
Piers Partridge: guitar
Per Knudsen: bass
John Nørgaard: snare
Gerry Lockran: vocals

upAll About My Loss
(Hans Theessink)

Well you told me that you never would leave me babe (2 x)
But times have changed and you left me anyway

Well the winds started hollerin' - stormwinds began to blow (2 x)
I was searching for the daylight but the sun wouldn't even show

I've been working like a dog, went straight home with all my pay (2 x)
Found nothing but empty sheets and pillows where my baby used to lay

When I tried to get some sleep babe, I was rockin' from side to side (2 x)
I was hollerin' and cryin', tryin' to make it through the night

If you've ever been mistreated, you know exactly how I feel (2 x)
Feel like a broke-down engine, I've lost my driving-wheel

Hans Theessink: vocals, guitar
