Blues & Rhythm, GB Hans Theessink is the most creative musician working in the bluesidiom in Europe - certainly the most original and convincing that I've heard.
Dirty Linen, USA, July 1996 Theessink uses somewhat minimal instrumental arrangements to emphasize the vocals and his bluesy sensibility is turned to creating funky, pulsing grooves and compelling dynamics. It's impossible not to tap your toes to this music. (Andy Allen)
Rotterdams Dagblad, NL, 31/1/94 Hans Theessink is een man die al 5 albums lang vernieuwend bezig is. Met zijn wortels in de country-blues heeft hij dat genre inmiddels grondig geherdefineerd. HT & Blue Groove zijn een kleurrijk internationaal kwartet. De verschijdenheid maakt het begrijpelijk dat de muziek van Theessinks gezelschap gemaakkelijk uitwaaiert naar gospel, soul en jazz. Op vorige albums zorgden gerenommeerde hulptroepen gerecruteerd bij The Band, James Brown en Ry Cooder nog voor een redelijk volle sound. Op deze live opgenomen CD is eenvoud echter troef. Theessink levert een kale stemmige set af waarin traditionals als "I shall not be moved" en "Will the circle be unbroken" in frisse arrangementen zijn gegoten. Ook al is het rijkelijk laat, we moeten maar eens apetrots worden op dit exportprodukt. (Joop Breedveld)
Jazz In Time, #52, B, 5/94 Ceux furent présents l’an passé à la presentation de Hans Theessink & Blue Groove lors du Spring Blues festival d’Ecaussines conviendront avec moi qu’il s’agit d’un guitariste-chanteur fort attachant. Ancré dans les musiques traditionelles (country, blues, gospel,....) il mène depuis maintenant pas mal d’années une belle carriére et ce aussi bien sur notre (et son) vieux continent qu’outre Atlantique. Depuis 1986 il fait équipe avec le musicien noir américain Jon Sass qui, avec son très efficace et suprenant jeu de Tuba, insuffle une touche tout à fait personnelle à la musique de Hans Theessink. Depuis quelques années, Blue Groove s’est transformé en quartet avec la chanteuse noire Dorretta Carter et le percussioniste/chanteur Alee Thelfa. Il en résulte une formation internationale qui interprète avec beaucoup de personnalité et sans aucun revivalisme idiot (loin de là) le blues, le gospel,.....bref les musiques africaines-américaines. Les compositions sont souvent originales, les textes actuels.... Ce CD de plus d’une heure a été enregistré en public pendant 1992-93 lors de divers concerts Européens. Le son est superbe, la musique charmeuse et très agréable. Mention spéciale pour la firme Blue Groove qui nous montre à cette occasion qu’il est aussi possible de faire d’un CD un très bel objet (très belle pochette). Recommandé! (J.P.Urbain )
