CD Birthday Bash is running for the CD Award 2009 up on myspace:

During the last weekend in august we were at the Tønder Festival in Denmark

This was the 35th edition. Hans already played on some of the early festivals long time ago and has played the festival regularly over the years.

Hans and Milica took their nephew Maximilian up for the trip, who just had the time of his life. Hans played as a special guest on The Guthrie Family's show, took part in the Pete Seeger Birthday Concert and also hosted a Songwriter Circle. Hans has a Danish past and plays a lot in Denmark. A good oportunity to meet up with his daughter Maria (who did a great job on all the press/promotion pr for the festival this year) and family, including grandchildren Emma and Jacob that we don't get to see as often as we'd like to. Milica took some nice pictures with her new camera. (The old one drowned on a canoe trip a few weeks ago).

Here's a review on  from Hans' solo gig at the Edinburgh Folk Club on May 20th 2009

On April 5th and 6th 2008 the legendary Birthday Bash Concerts where held in the Metropol club in Vienna. Lots of fans and musical friends came from all over the world to celebrate Hans’ 60th birthday and what a celebration it was - a real big birthday bash! The atmosphere was wonderful and the musicians offered a musical firework full of surprises. The shows were recorded and “Hans Theessink – Birthday Bash” is the result. This double CD is a unique document with unusual musical combinations and sessions.

Memphis :  The Blues Foundation celebrierte  30th anniversary of the Blues Music Awards

May 2009,  Memphis in the Meantime Baby – Hans Theessink & Terry Evans nominated for acoustic album if the year at the BLUES AWARDS .  The Boys were not able to attend. Hans being on tour in GB and Terry just got back from an extensive tour in Europe, partly with Hans, partly with his own Terry Evans Band. So it was clear for Milica to travel to the Lions Den with the Vision in my Heart to win. Being part of this fantastic event and fabulous gathering of all this wonderful people of the Blues World -  it was clear right from the start: everybody is a winner, Baby !!!
Already on my flight from Miami to Memphis I felt a certain vibe coming up. On the plane I met Steve Simon of St.John Blues Festival. John was collected  at the airport by Billy Gibson (nominee and winner Instrumentalist Harmonika) in his Pick-up Truck. So they squeezed me in and gave me a lift to the  Marriott Hotel. At the  Trolly Stop I met  Larry Taylor (Canned Heat/ bass ) und Richard Innes (Tom Waitts, Canned Heat/drums) both  Blues Award Nominees. We shared a Stretch Limo and went straight away to the famous BBQ Place  Rendevous. So all of that was a good start. Don’t you agree ?? but it just got better all time , meeting so many nice people.
Bob Corritore sent out is Blues Newsletter and was kind enough to let me use some of his words and links (which I am not able to do..)  This will  explains what we experienced .
Memphis Recap: As The Blues Foundation celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Blues Music Awards, numerous musicians, labels, booking agents, festival bookers, publicists, photographers, writers, and managers gathered in Memphis last Thursday to be a part of the proceedings.  Absent were many of the fallen blues artists who were once a big part of these proceedings: Robert Lockwood, Jr., Little Milton, Ruth Brown, Rufus Thomas, and others who were regular participants in the event. But still, the family gathers and flaunts the seasoned veterans like Irma Thomas, Koko Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Bobby "Blue" Bland, B.B. King, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Bob Stroger, Taj Mahal, and others. The event also carries the flame by nurturing some of the new artists on the scene, as well as encouraging the dedicated career blues musicians who are making their gradual rise into wider recognition. This is a gathering of like-minded blues lovers rooting for their favorite blues nominee, and for the music in general.
Wednesday was the Hall Of Fame dinner.  Blues Foundation director Jay Sieleman opened the proceedings before turning it over to Bill Wax. Taj Mahal was introduced by Maria Muldaur and  Marcia Ball's loving and personal ode to Clifford Antone, Bruce Iglauer's in-depth character description of Son Seals, for a complete list of all the Hall Of Fame 2009 inductees, click here.
I was sitting at a table with Taj Mahal, his daughter and grandson, who specially flew in to be the proudest witness of Taj indroduction into the Hall of Fame .
Thursday was the awards ceremony. I was kind of getting nervous.  The room was immediately full. It all started with a Dinner and countless Live-Performances. it was a non-stop party filled with music, speeches, and conversation. A performance  by Bettye LaVette, a surprise musical meeting of B.B. King and Curtis Salgado,  a great ballad by New Orleans Soul Queen Irma Thomas and the absolute greatest of the night was Koko Taylor performing “Wang Dang Doodle” with stunning backing by The Mannish Boys. Some other highlights of note were: Janiva Magness being presented the entertainer of the year award by B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt,  For a complete listing of the nominees and winners, click here. The pairing of Theessink's deep, emotive baritone with Evans' gospel-colored tenor makes this record one of the year's best acoustic outings.

The English version of Hans’ blues guitar instruction dvd “HOOKED ON THE BLUES“ is now available.

Soulful Songs and Powerful Techniques From a Master Bluesman
Taught By: Hans Theessink
70-minute DVD, Includes music + tab book

“Dazzling! Armed with a smokin’ repertoire, he breathes new life into acoustic blues.”
-Guitar Player Magazine

Blues fans and players worldwide have embraced the haunting, soulful sounds of the Mississippi Delta. Hans Theessink, a masterful player, singer and performer, teaches the powerful guitar styles that he learned first-hand from traditional players in the American South.
Hans’ passion for the blues is clear as he details the tunings, chord shapes, bass runs, fingerpicking style, slide technique and percussive strokes that form the core of every good blues player’s repertoire. He plays, sings and analyzes seven favorite classics and originals: Prison Blues, Big Bill’s Guitar, Vicksburg Is My Home, Sugar Babe, You Make Me Feel So Good, Sitting On Top Of The World, Two Trains.
Hans closes this DVD lesson with a full performance of Down In Mississippi Where The Blues Was Born, a stirring homage to his favorite blues masters.
As you add these powerful songs to your repertoire, your understanding of this important tradition will deepen and you’ll be inspired to create your own compelling blues arrangements.

Hans Theessink & Terry Evans 03/29/08up
Both bluesmen have worked together in the past and for years had a vision of combining forces for a stripped down duo recording. In Dec 2007 they got together in L.A. to do just that. Within 2 days they recorded a soulful album of original songs and soul-blues classics. The album has an intimate feel and obviously they were having a great time making music together.
Both Hans and Terry have a reputation for superb recordings and VISIONS will once again delight even the most discerning hi-fi fan with a fantastic sonic experience.

Here’s a SLOW TRAIN review in The Herald (UK-Scotland) 29.09.2007
Blues: Hans Theessink "SLOW TRAIN" Never mind whether white men can sing the blues, can the sounds of the Mississippi cottonfields be reproduced in the Austrian vineyards? The answer to both questions is yes, because Hans Theessink has just produced an album, Slow Train, that has the dust, dirt and elbow grease of the Delta – in a makeshift studio that’s a short truck drive away from his home in Vienna. The Dutch-born singer and guitar picker also brings the country blues into the 21st century with persuasive observations on Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, as well as gospel-inflected songs and his trademark big grooving tales of love, troubles and leave taking. (Rob Adams, The Herald, UK, 29.09.2007)

On his way from Vienna to the UK, Hans played a show in Wendelstein in Germany (review in German in the Nürnberger Zeitung from 25.09.2007) and another show in Oudenaarde, Belgium (review by Antoine Legat in dutch on

On May 4th Hans returned with his new album to the place where SLOW TRAIN was recorded in September 06. As a thank you to their host, the Hans Theessink Band played a concert for Pinky Wall and his friends and invited guests of the international press. Musician friends Schiffkowitz (STS) and Ewald Pfleger (Opus) joined us for the party.
